thank you for joining us this morning. i want to start with weather and traffic. weather rosemary orozco is in for steve. >> fair weather in the forecast. lasting through the weekend. hopefully that brings a smile to your face. tgif to you. we're off to a chilly start this morning. mostly sunny skies for the afternoon. temperatures running warm for december and it will be a trend we see for your weekend. i'll have details on this coming up in a moment. good morning, tara. good morning, rosemary. here's a look at traffic through 880. the headlights are southbound as you make your way toward the hayward area. up next we have a look at the east shore freeway. the headlights you see are folks heading westbound on to the mccarthur maze and to the bay bridge toll plaza where we are starting to see backup. i'll have an update in a couple minutes. let's head back to the desk. we begin with our developing story out of japan.

there was another 5.0 aftershock just about an hour ago. the main earthquake registered a magnitude 7.3. it was off the coast of japan. that is where last years deadly quake and tsunami hit. there is new video from tokyo although the city is 267 southwest from the epicenter. you can see high-rise buildings swaying there. the quake rattled many nerves of course. one quake reported a three foot high tsunami but no large waves. the tsunami warning has been lifted. rail service was temporarily stopped for safety checks. time now 6:02. a lot of questions right now after a man fell 30 feet during last nights raiders game. ktvu christien kafton is live outside the coliseum. what are police saying? >> reporter: there are a lot of

discrepancies in this story. take a look here we're now at the raider store just across from the coliseum. a lot of questions about this fan who survived. either jumping or accidentally falling from the third deck to the lower concourse below. estimated 30-50 feet. that fan fell during last nights raiders-broncos game. emt, police, and sheriffs deputies were on scene. they were able to respond quickly. there are conflicting reports whether that fan fell or jumped. they say it's a very long drop from that third level down to the lower concourse and recall incidents like this have happened at the coliseum and other stadiums around the country. >> people are falling down like in texas or los angeles. the guy fell out of the stadium or fell out of the -- he was with his child. and he reached for a ball and fell over the railing and down dropped 30 feet. but if you fall on something,

you've got chairs with backs you could hit plus the cement. >> reporter: now emergency workers took the man involved in last nightsics accident to high land hospital just 3.5 miles away from the coliseum with serious injuries. the man's identity has not been released. they have released a statement sayingly they have no information. but do say their thoughts and prayers are with the family and prayers of the victim of that fall. we will try to contact oakland police throughout the morning to try to find out more details about this and find out if this accident was or if this fall was an accident or if this man may have jumped. there is still a lot of questions about what happened at last nights raiders game. for now we are live in oakland christien kafton. 6:04. in overnight flews the oakland swat team surrounded an apartment complex. this one right here. warrants were being served. we have no other details right now but all of that swat

activity it ended about 2:00 this morning. still no word of any arrests were made. more headaches for san francisco city college. ktvu channel 2 reporter lorraine blanco has information on a new threat to the school's funding and how it could effect the college's fight to keep its accreditation. pam administrators here at city college of san francisco say it's not on pace to enroll 34,000 full-time students here and that is how many students they need to keep full state funding. last year they enrolled 32,600 full-time students and it was put on probation. administrators expect to fall thousands short this school year and the second year in a row so the state could fund the college at a lower rate next fiscal year. that is likely to result in less course offerings for students and layoffs here. this issue is one of several problems ccsf is facing. a big deadline looms for the school to keep its accreditation. on march 15th it has to submit

a report saying it has made the fiscal and structural changes to stay open here. on a positive note last month voters passed proposition a to provide revenue for this college. the school will get $16 million a year for the next eight years and that will help with some of the financial problems. it does remain to be seen though the exact amount of money the school will lose if it doesn't reach its target enrollment this year. reporting live in san francisco lorraine blanco ktvu channel 2 news. we are now hearing that there may only be two people at the fiscal cliff negotiating table. according to the new york times house speaker john boehner says he wants to negotiate directly with president obama. he has asked that senate leaders and house minority leader nancy pelosi be excluded from future talks and those say clearing the negotiating room clears the chances for success. f we have new unemployment numbers released just a few

minutes ago. employers added 146,000 new jobs in november. the unemployment rate dropped to a four-year low of 7 .7%. coming up at 6:15 the factors that economists predicted would have a negative impact on the numbers but apparently did not. time now 6:07. we are following this story. oakland church youth group traveling in florida they are out of money and their belongings because thieves broke into their van. a group of 24 teenagers and young adults were eating at a restaurant yesterday about an hour after arriving far weekend youth conference. someone broke into their van stole 12,000 cash. one member of the group says they were able to have some money mired so they -- wired so they did spend last night in a hotel. survivors of the attack on pearl hear already be honored on coast guard island. today is the 71st anniversary of the tragedy that helped propel the united states into world war ii. the ceremony will include the

arrival of veterans in world war ii era military vehicles placing a wreath and a 21 gun salute. bay area survivors will also mark the day by lighting the beacon mt. diablo at dusk. it will shine until dawn. it was called the eye of diablo it was turned off the day after the attack so it would not be a guide for enemy planes. it stayed dark until 1964 and now it is it will every year on this day december 7th. relatively quiet friday morning. there is a couple accidents. >> yes, there are. we have in the milpitas area an accident there overall things are looking pretty good. let's take a look at our maps. we can show you what we're talking about here. this is 680 southbound at mission boulevard. the right lane blocked here. out here in livermore on 580 westbound we do have an accident there as well. you can see it is very slow going. as it typically is for this time of the morning on 580.

apocalypse. coming up why the simulation at a homeland security conference in san diego is being called a waste of taxpayer money. time is 6:16. within the last 45 minutes the latest jobs numbers came out. ktvu alison burns reports from our washington, d.c. newsroom more jobs were added in november than the economists predicted. alison. >> reporter: dave, 146,000 jobs were added in november. that is twice as many as economists were expecting as for the unemployment rate it also improved. it's at 7.7% down from 7.9%. that is the lowest unemployment rate in four years. now economists thought the fallout from hurricane sandy would play a big role the labor department says it really didn't effect hiring. as for fiscal cliff fears would keep businesses from around the country from hiring that does not seem to be the case. either more than half of the

jobs added last month came in retail and health care. the jobs were lost in construction and manufacturing. we're working now to get reaction from the white house and members of congress and hope to have that for you during my next update. reporting live from washington, d.c. alison burns. time now 6:17. another story about controversial comedian katt williams. he has more legal problems after announcing he has unreported. an arrest warrant has been issued for katt williams. chp claims williams almost ran down five people when he drove his motorcycle on to a sidewalk. katt williams also failed to show up at an arraignment in seattle to face charges he hit a man with microphone and threw chairs at fans. despite all the controversy williams managers say he's not retiring and will continue with his nation-wide tour. police in mill valley have

arrested a manager of an assisted living facility on suspicion of fraud, identity theft, and financial elder abuse. mario of novato is suspected of stealing more than $40,000 from a woman who lived at the marin terrorist assisted living facility. the woman has no family and her financial advisor noticed charges she couldn't center made. the federal communications commission is pushing for a change in policy when it comes to the use of electronic devices on flights. right now the faa requires all devices be turned off during takeoff and landing. but the new york time reports the fcc chairman wants passengers to be able to keep using their devices at all times. he sent a letter to the federal aviation administration that says it will review the policy. time now just about 6:19. tara is back. and more accidents in the east bay. >> yeah.

they are celebrating the broadway show of spiderman. it's now in the top 20 highest grossing broadway shows. which is good. we talked about how much money they spent. they had problems off of that. but they are celebrating the success of the show this morning. and on the trading floor new york stock exchange celebrating the success of the jobs report this morning. >> they are doing high fives too. >> yes, they are. it's surprisingly good. the numbers were supposed to head lower but now it looks like a pretty good day. we'll talk about that coming up. we'll smile and say good morning, to you. thank you for joining us here on ktvu channel 2 morning news it's friday, december 7th i'm dave clark. >> good morning, i'm pam cook. time now 6:30. >> the news right now japan had a huge 7.3 quake early today. it was a magnitude 7.3 it will just after midnight our time off north eastern japan. that same general area as last years killer quake and tsunami. we have new video from tokyo. look at this.

people wearing safety masks. a lot of them worried about health risks. one coastal city reported a three foot high tsunami. we have heard of some injuries but nothing really serious yet. tsunami warning has been lifted. it was lifted two hours after that first quake hit. there have been a lot of aftershocks including a 5.0 that hit about 90 minutes ago. nuclear workers -- nuclear workers were ordered to safe locations but so far no problems. a man is in the hospital with injury serious -- with serious injuries after falling from the third deck at the raiders game. christien kafton joins us outside the coliseum. >> reporter: good morning. at this point there are still a lot more questions than answers about this incident. here's what we do know so far at last nights game that fan either survived either jumping or falling from the third deck to the lower concourse.

you can get a sense of just how far that fall may have been. it's an estimated 30-50 feet. the fan fell during last nights raiders broncos game. emt, police, and sheriffs deputies were all on scene for last nights game. they were able to respond quickly. there are conflicting reports whether that fan fell or jumped. sports fans that have been inside the coliseum say it's a very long drop from the third level down to the lower concourse. and recall that incidents like this have happened at the coliseum and other stadiums around the country. >> was it in texas or los angeles. the guy fell out of the stadium. he was with his child and he reached for a ball and fell over the railing and down dropped 30 feet. but if you fall on something you've got chairs with backs that you could hit. >> reporter: now the man involved in last nights incident was taken to highland hospital just 3.5 miles away

with serious injuries. so far authorities are not releasing any details about his identity or no updates on his condition. the raiders have released a statement saying they have no information beyond what investigators are releasing but their thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the victim of that fall. we will continue to try to get in contact with oakland police and alameda county sheriffs that were both here patrolling this game to try to get a little more detail about this and get clarity as to whether this man jumped or whether this fall was accidental. for now we are live at the coliseum in oakland christien kafton ktvu channel 2 news. police are looking far young man who stabbed a 74-year- old in downtown gilroy. it happened yesterday afternoon right near the gilroy public library. police say the victim was stabbed in his torso. they believe he will survive the attack. the attacker is described as a white man in his 20s with blond hair who was wearing dirty tan clothing. our time is just about 6:34.

some san francisco supervisors questioning if the police should have stun guns. the police department wants to give stun guns to specially trained officers. supporters say stun guns can ease a dangerous situation with nonlethal force. during yesterday's hearing several supervisors said police may rely on stun guns too much. only the police commission can approve the use of stun guns. a note placed inside utility bills making some san jose police officers very angry. coming up the controversial insert that is upsetting members of the ranking five. it's another day of suspense. supreme court is meeting in conference again. brian flores is in san francisco's castro district with what we might hear from the justices today. brian. >> reporter: yeah. that is an operative word there might. we are not sure how the justices will rule this morning. we are anticipating some type

of action on proposition 8 which is the states ruling on gay marriage. now this is a similar situation to what we saw on monday this week where the justices met behind closed doors to decide whether or not to take the case. but let's lay out what could happen this morning and this afternoon. the first is that the justices could completely refuse to review the lower courts ruling that essentially states that prop 8 is illegal. this is a key if that is the case, then gay pup couples could legal -- gay couples could legally marry next week. the justices could decide to hear the case if that happens a ruling on prop 8 could come by june and a third situation which is similar to what happened on monday what we may be anticipating today the justices would put any action on hold until further notice. they are not required to provide any reason why but it could be january until any action on prop 8 is heard again. but again we'll get reaction and any reaction here from the castro district if there is a ruling that comes this morning

or this afternoon. for now i'm lye in the castro -- for now i'm live in the castro district. president obama's approval rating is up. it stands at 57%. that is the highest rating since may of 2011 when navy seals killed osama bin laden. 42% of americans says the country is on the right track and majority believe it's likely president obama will approve the the economy. the national football league says it would help the oakland raiders build a new stadium. roger goodell says it's crucial the raiders improve their stadium situation and the national football league would help pay for a new one. the raiders and city of oakland have held talks about a new stadium but there is nothing certain yet. commissioner goodell said the raiders could share the 49ers new stadium but that deal would have to be worked out between those two teams. bart is trying to do something for military veterans giving them some help in getting a job. the board of directors approved a new hiring policy yesterday.

it gives military veterans a 5% chance over other possible perspective workers. the veterans have to have six months of active status and honorable discharge. they also have to pass an exam. the new policy begins at the beginning of the new year. stretch of highway 1 that was closed down because of the recent wet weather could be back open today. it's between genre and timber road. now the recent rain especially wednesday's storm caused mud and rock slides and washed away part of the road. crews are working to stabilize that hillside and detours will continue until they are finished. let's check in with tara. there is another accident in the south bay. traffic is picking up out there. talk to me tara. tara makes us wait. >> i'm sorry about that. we do have an injury accident in the san jose area. this is highway 87 a bicyclist verses a car. if we take a look at our maps

we can show you a couple trouble spots we have here. this is a traffic light malfunctioning chp has issued a caution here. 84 southbound at east jacqueline boulevard. then if we head up into the north bay. this is an earlier accident we told you about here. this is highway 37 eastbound at sonoma raceway. you can see traffic is getting backed up here 37 westbound. this is a car that went down the embankment here between the raceway and bridge. so it is causing some delays as they try to get the emergency crews in there to get everything out. up next a look at the east shore freeway we can show you that traffic is starting to back up there down through the berkeley area because we do have a three-car crash we want to mention at the off ramp there. it is causing problems. finally at the bay bridge toll plaza you can see the metering lights are on. you're looking at a 15-20 minute wait. coming up we'll take a look at your south bay traffic.

had predicted. 146,000 jobs were added. and the unemployment rate fell to a four-year low of 7.7%. two san jose restaurants have a lot of cleaning up to do after a fire forced them to evacuate last night. ktvu janine de la vega is in san jose to tell us about a newly discovered problem at some neighboring businesses. janine. >> reporter: well, pam, there is no fire damage on the outside of this building with the fire happened at panda express. but the electricity is out in the entire building. where you see right now it's supposed to be open at 6:00 a.m. but the employees are sitting inside there with candles on. they are waiting for help. this fire erupted before 9:30 last night. when the restaurants on san filipe road they were full of customers. firefighters arrived and had

them evacuated. they located the origin of the fire which was at a crawl space between the attic and exterior electrical sign. firefighters managed to get it knocked down in 40 minutes. firefighters are investigating the cause of the fire but they have a hunch. >> we do think it may be related to the electrical and then there are large expeer your signs -- exterior signs that name restaurants and buildings. there is a lot of electricity running through those. it could have smoldered in the wood work for an extended period of time. >> reporter: the building is sprinklered. firefighters say that helped the fire from spreading to other businesses in the strip mall. no one was injured in the blaze. firefighters say while there is not any significant smoke damage, they think that the restaurant should open. that is at least what they told us last night. they don't know how much water damage there is. back out here live you can see this is a truck that pulled up that seems to be electrical worker checking the lights on the building next door to where

the fire happened. at this point we're unsure if that same truck will come over and fix the problem at the building where the actual fire happened. but again now it's really unclear if these businesses are even going to open because there is no power to the entire building. reporting live from san jose janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 news. this morning software founder john mcafee is back in a detention center after being rushed to the hospital. he was treated by doctors yesterday after complaining about chest pains. it appears he is suffering from stress. they are fighting to keep him from being flown back to belize where he is wanted in questioning for the death of a neighbor. authorities in guatemala seasoned him asylum after he entered illegally. protestors are filling the streets in cairo egypt. a tv speech by president morsi last night did not deal with

their concerns. in the speech president morsi refused to back off his controversial decree that gave himself sweeping new powers. he also insisted a constitutional referendum scheduled for december 15th will go on. but he did invite his political critics to a meeting tomorrow at the presidential palace. san jose police are angry about a flier that was inside people's utility bills. the first of the kind mailer went out to 194,000 households. it provides a number to call with anyone concerns or complaints about the police. san jose independent police auditor put out the flier and says it mandates the outreach. >> we're a place. a safe place for any member of the public to come to bring a concern about san jose police department policy. >> it's kind of odd timing. there are certainly a number of very serious issues that the police department is facing that we think the city should engage on. >> the police union says the insert comes at a time when the

a strike on december 17th one of the busiest times of the year. union members picketed yesterday at the port of oakland on behalf of nonunion workers who say they have been punished to try to organize. union members want the contractor hms host to deal with nonunion workers complaints. they also want a new contract. they want both by december 14th or they may go on strike. san francisco health officials are urging gay men to get vaccinated for meningitis if they plan to travel to new york. 12 cases have been identified in gay men in new york in the past year. three have been diagnosissed in the last six weeken. the severe infection effects the tissue surrounding the brain and spinal cord and spread by intimate contact. san francisco has not experienced an increase in cases but health officials say they do want people to be aware of that outbreak. this will open your eyes.
